Massage therapy tied to weight loss?

New research has shown that enjoying a massage every once in a while may help you on your path to diet and weight loss. Too good to be true? Believe it or not, this is true–and we’ll explain how.

First of all, massages release endorphins in your body. Endorphins are the “feel good” chemicals you get from certain foods and activities. Well, these chemicals have an indirect effect on your body’s metabolism– by making you feel good, it can often block the hunger signals from your brain, therefore helping you with your weight loss goals. Less stress lessens the body’s ability to store fat. Massage can also increase circulation and blood flow therefore helping you burn fat faster with a higher metabolic rate.

So there you go– another excuse to schedule that massage you’ve been dying to get!

Survey Findings on Massages!

Here are some interesting survey results by Opinion Research Corp. International in Princeton, N.J.

Based on a national sample of 1,014 U.S. adults:

  • 90% of Americans feel massage is good for a person’s health.
  • 93% agree that massage is effective for pain relief.
  • Massage Therapy in people age 65+ has tripled from 4% in 1997 to 15%
  • 34% of Americans had a massage in the past year
  • 73% of those who had a massage recommend it to a person they know.
  • 46% have had a massage to relieve pain.
  • From those who has discussed massage therapy with a medical professional, 57% said they encouraged them to get a massage.

Massage has also been seen to be somewhat of a substitute to medication for those experiencing pain. We can look forward to more developments in massage research and it’s benefits as it becomes more prominent.

Reflexology

Developed in the early twentieth century, reflexology was originally known as “zone therapy.” This type of massage focuses only on ones and hands feet. During a reflexology session, the massage therapist will focus on specific target points that will send signals to the brain and will balance the nervous system. This is done by moving and stretching the hands and feet while applying pressure to reflex areas and other parts of the body. These pressure areas correspond to specific organs of the body. The endorphins released during a reflexology session will reduce the amount of stress the client feels while returning the body back to its equilibrium. Reflexology provides pain relief to those who are suffering tension headaches, arthritis, digestive issues, and back pain.

Sports Massage

The sports massage is focused on athletes that play any kind of sports. Sports massages are customized to the individual based on what sports they place or if they have had previous pain or injuries in any part of their body. Athletes benefit from these personalized massages because it increases flexibility, decreases fatigue, promotes endurance, helps prevent injuries, and gets them ready to perform at their best.

Swedish Massage

Usually, when people think of massage, the type of massage that they visualize is a Swedish massage. Developed in Stockholm several centuries ago, this form of bodywork has become the most common type of massage that is performed

The massage therapists at Massage Envy will rub the muscles with long gliding strokes in the same direction of blood flowing back to the heart to get the client’s body to relax. Firm kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending, stretching, and applying pressure with their hands and palms are a few other techniques used to calm the muscles of the body down. The use of lotion will not only reduce friction, but stimulate the skin as well.

The benefits of a Swedish massage includes an increase of oxygen in the blood, a decline in muscle toxins, better circulation and flexibility, and less muscle tension.

Deep Tissue Massage

Through slow strokes and deep finger pressure, deep tissues massage target knots and release chronic muscle tension. A decrease in inflammation and the elimination of scar tissue are other benefits that one can gain from a deep tissue massage. The deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia are the focus of these massages.

Some of the more intense techniques used for this type of massage, such as deep finger pressure, may cause the recipient of the massage some discomfort or soreness for a few days following the massage. After the client no longer feels sore or discomfort, they will experience the relaxation and pain relief that is desired.
