Prenatal Massages

Why Massage During Pregnancy?

Massage during pregnancy offers undeniable physical benefits. At Massage Envy, our professional massage therapists will work to stimulate your lymphatic system, increasing immunity and the removal of excess toxins, while also stabilizing hormonal levels and balancing the glandular system. Hormonal changes can cause depression and anxiety during pregnancy, which is why many expecting mothers can find relief at Massage Envy.

What Are The Benefits Of Prenatal Massage?

Massage therapy is a wonderful, complimentary choice for prenatal care and a healthy way to reduce stress and promote general well-being. Massage Envy’s professional therapists work to relieve the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches, joint pain, and edema. In addition, by relaxing nervous tension, you can experience a better night’s sleep. Below are examples of how massage can help you throughout your pregnancy:

First Trimester

  • Relieve headaches
  • Help alleviate morning sickness
  • Reduce fatigue

Second Trimester

  • Alleviate backaches
  • Relieve leg cramps

Third Trimester

  • Reduce swelling/edema
  • Relieve pain from varicosities
  • Enhance sleep
  • Prepare pelvic muscles for birth process

How Will I Receive My Massage?

When receiving a prenatal massage at Massage Envy, you will be gently positioned on your side to keep you comfortable while your therapist massages your back. Once finished with your back, you may then be placed in a semi-reclining position while your professional therapist massages the front of your body. During the first trimester, it is also acceptable for clients to lie on their backs with a slight elevation under one hip. This positioning alleviates the extra strain on the lower back and pelvic areas when the massage is being administered.

Throughout each session, our therapists will use a special body support cushion to ensure comfort and proper positioning. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, your therapist may utilize reflexology, Swedish massage, or certain methods that address your specific requests and needs.

Are There Times When Massage During Pregnancy Should Be Avoided?

It is very important you obtain approval from your obstetrician before receiving any form of massage during pregnancy. Women with normal, low-risk pregnancies can benefit greatly from massage by a Massage Envy professional massage therapist. However, women in high-risk pregnancies should consult with their doctor or midwife before beginning one of our massage therapy programs. If at any time during the massage you experience discomfort, tell your therapist immediately.

Survey Findings on Massages!

Here are some interesting survey results by Opinion Research Corp. International in Princeton, N.J.

Based on a national sample of 1,014 U.S. adults:

  • 90% of Americans feel massage is good for a person’s health.
  • 93% agree that massage is effective for pain relief.
  • Massage Therapy in people age 65+ has tripled from 4% in 1997 to 15%
  • 34% of Americans had a massage in the past year
  • 73% of those who had a massage recommend it to a person they know.
  • 46% have had a massage to relieve pain.
  • From those who has discussed massage therapy with a medical professional, 57% said they encouraged them to get a massage.

Massage has also been seen to be somewhat of a substitute to medication for those experiencing pain. We can look forward to more developments in massage research and it’s benefits as it becomes more prominent.

Your First Visit!

At Massage Envy we believe everyone should be able to take advantage of the wonderful therapeutic and stress relieving benefits of massage therapy.  We are committed to ensuring that every time you visit one of our clinics, you enjoy a caring and healing experience provided by a professional massage therapist. If you’ve never visited Massage Envy or have yet to receive a professional massage therapy session, we thought it would be helpful for you to know what to expect on your first visit.

Meet and Greet

Once you arrive at Massage Envy, our front desk will greet you and ask you to fill out a Client Intake Form and a quick survey. The Client Intake Form is where you record any medical history, past/present injuries and other physical conditions we should be made aware of.  Your massage therapist will greet you and review the Client Intake Form with you. They will inquire about the reason(s) you are coming for a massage, your current physical condition and any specific areas in which you are experiencing pain or would like addressed during your massage.

The Treatment Room

Your massage therapist will then take you to a peaceful, spa-like treatment room where a comfortable massage table dressed with a warming blanket and crisp clean sheets awaits.  A small shelf for your personal belongings and a chair are also provided for your use. Your massage therapist will leave the room and wait outside while you disrobe to your level of comfort. Some clients prefer to completely disrobe, while some will remain partially clothed. Once disrobed, you will lie on the massage table, under the top sheet. Your massage therapist will give you a few minutes for this process and will knock on the door to ask if you are ready before entering your room.

You will always be draped with the top sheet during your massage session and an additional blanket is available at your request. Your massage therapist will only uncover the part of the body they are working on, ensuring that your modesty is respected at all times.

You can expect a tranquil and comfortable environment during your massage. The massage table is padded and a heating blanket is placed beneath the sheet, which you can have adjusted to your preference. There will be relaxing music playing, unless you request otherwise, and the room should be quiet, with no outside distractions.

Your Needs First

Before beginning the session, your therapist will ask you to alert them if, at any time during the session, a technique or stroke they are using is uncomfortable. Depending on your specific needs or requests, your massage therapist will either perform a customized full-body massage (for general relaxation and stress reduction) or focus on the specific parts of your body that you have requested. Massage Envy uses only the highest quality hypo-allergenic massage creams and lotions during your treatment.

To Paradise and Back

Once your massage therapy session is completed, your therapist will leave the room so you may re-dress. Your therapist will wait outside the room for you, and then take you back to the front area.

Our massage therapy sessions are one hour in length. This time includes a 5 minute pre-interview, 50 minutes of hands-on time and 5 minutes at the end for you to re-dress.

Make the Most of your Massage

From the American Massage Therapy Association, here are some tips to help you get the most out of your massage:

  • Be on time, or better yet, early. Don’t arrive rushed or frenzied, instead come in a few minutes early and begin your relaxation process.
  • Don’t eat a huge meal beforehand.
  • Communicate. Clothes on or off; what you want out of the massage; room temperature; lighting. Don’t hesitate to speak up.
  • Keep breathing. It may sound ridiculous, but many people hold their breath while a sensitive area is getting massaged. Keep this in mind to remind yourself to breath and relax your body.
  • Clear your mind. Focus on how the touch feels, you will get more of an experience this way.
  • Drink plenty of water afterwards. Also, if possible, find some quiet time in your favorite spot to absorb the results of your session.

Preparing for your First Massage

There are many reasons why we choose to get a massage. Maybe it’s been a stressful week, perhaps a loved one has given you one as a gift, or maybe there’s an awful knot in your neck that you can’t seem to get rid of. No matter what the reason, we all could use time to relax and get pampered with a therapeutic massage. Below are some steps you should follow prior to your first massage.

  1. Research the type of massage you will get to meet your expectations.
  2. Most spas have a website explaining the different benefits of the massages they offer, so find a location to fit your needs.
  3. Schedule a massage based on a time frame where you will not be worrying about meetings, work, etc. This will keep you in a relaxed state before and after your massage.
  4. On your way to the spa, dress comfortably. You will be removing your clothes beforehand. If you are a bit shy, don’t worry. You will be partially covered at all times needing only to expose prime areas such as back, arms and legs.
  5. Some suggest hydrating before a massage, but it is better not to load up on fluids prior to, but rather after the massage to prevent any dehydration.
  6. Lastly, relax and enjoy.
